ACP appeals for place of safety to house street children:
Fri Jan 13, 2006
Assistant Commissioner of Police in Charge of Area One, Keith ‘Trinity’ Gardner has appealed for a proper place of safety to house street children.
His appeal comes in the wake of concerns expressed by the business sector in Montego Bay that the street children are abusive and have been harassing tourists.
ACP Gardner said the children are arrested but they then escape from the place of safety within a few days.
He said washing windscreens at stoplights has become a lucrative business and most of the children have migrated from Kingston.
ACP Gardner added that the children are used by adults, as they can earn up to $2,000.00 per day.
One adult was recently arrested for harbouring the children.
Meanwhile, the senior cop said Wednesday’s promotion of several traffic cops by Commissioner of Police Lucius Thomas will help curtail the problem as there will be more supervision on the streets."
